An Art-Based Narrative Inquiry into the Life of an Ovarian Cancer Survivor

Abstract
The objectives of study were to have deep understanding and discover meanings of the life of ovarian cancer survivor by the art-based narrative approaches by investigating the progress of story-telling and embracing the life through paintings. The participant was a woman in her 30s who had been diagnosed with the ovarian cancer and undergone surgery and chemotherapy. Data collection was carried out from October to December, 2020 through two pre-intervention interviews and 12 sessions of art therapy consisting artworks by the participant and the responsive art, journals, and daily research logs of the researcher. The life experience stories of the participant is found in 'Even though I came out of a cave boldly,' 'Going into a dark tunnel', 'Just getting out of the tunnel', and 'Raising my head to look at the light.' The experience of art-based therapy is stated in ¡®The path towards finding the myth of the self.¡¯ The interpretation of the life of the participant derived from the art therapy experience is identified in 'Even though darkness devoured me', 'Blossoming through a struggle of love', and 'Becoming each other's savior.' The meaning of the art therapy experience is stated in 'The path towards finding the myth of the self.¡¯ Based on the results, this study is expected to have an increased understanding of the life experiences of ovarian cancer survivors and providing the empirical data for the intervention of art therapy, thereby helped to lay the foundation for establishing methods for psychological interventions, especially for female cancer survivors.
